GENERAL INFORMATION

USING YOUR FIREBOARD

USING YOUR FIREBOARD THERMOMETER IS SIMPLE! JUST TURN IT ON (HOLD POWER BUTTON FOR 3 SECONDS), AND CONNECT YOUR TEMPERATURE PROBES.

The FireBoard will automatically re-connect to any wireless networks which have been previously configured and are still available. Temperatures are also always available over Bluetooth, provided it is in range (approx 30m).
A new session will automatically be started once temperature data is being pushed. Sessions will automatically close after 30 minutes of inactivity. You can easily modify the session name and add notes via the Sessions view of the app.

Multiple alerts can be configured for each channel via the Dashboard view of the app. Just touch the channel you wish to configure. The alerts have the following parameters:
  • Max/Min Temp: Thresholds for alert condition (one or both can be set).
  • Email & SMS Notifications: Toggle your notification preference(s).
  • Custom Start/End Times: Define when alerts are active (alerts will fire only inside of this time window). By default, this window is all day.
  • Minutes Buffer: Alerts will not fire unless conditions exist longer than this value. Default value is 0.
  • Minutes Repeat: Specify how often alerts will repeat once alert conditions are triggered.

WILL IT WORK WITH MY PHONE/TABLET?
FireBoard requires that your mobile device is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0+ hardware and run either iOS or Android.  To use FireBoard on your Apple product, make sure your device is one of the following with iOS8 or later:
  • iPhone 4s or later.
  • iPad (3rd generation) or later.
  • iPad mini or later.
  • iPod touch (5th generation) or later.
To use your FireBoard on an Android device, make sure your device is on Android 5.0 or later and is equipped with a Bluetooth 4.0+ radio. Not sure if your phone meets this requirement? Contact us and let us know which phone you’re using, we’ll do our best to let you know the answer!

PROBE INFORMATION

ARE THE PROBES WATERPROOF?
The probes are designed to be resistant to water, as each probe contains potting material located underneath the strain relief of the probe (i.e., where the probe tube meets the wire).  Even though they are water resistant, we urge caution when cleaning and recommend against submerging them.  The less water that comes into contact with the probes, the lower the probability of failure due to moisture!

DO THE AMBIENT PROBES PLUG IN THE SAME WAY AS THE FOOD PROBES?
Yes, the ambient probes have an identical plug (2.5mm audio plug) on the end, so you can mix and match ambient / food probes however you would like. The sensors are identical inside so they work exactly the same way.

WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE AMBIENT PROBES?
Standard Food probe (SF311T):

length = 12.7cm straight section + 90° bend
collar diameter = 10.5mm
diameter (probe itself) = 4mm
Standard Ambient probe (SANT311T):
length = 5.7cm
diameter (probe itself) = 4mm
diameter including strain relief = 6mm
Smoker Ambient Probe (SS311T):
(this fits standard Dial / Gauge thermometers such as this Tel-Tru)
length = 5.7cm
diameter (probe itself) = 4mm
threading = 1/2” NTP fitting (note the threaded section is approx 27/32″ in true diameter)
Note: all probe plugs are 7.5mm in diameter at their widest section

HOW LONG ARE THE PROBE CABLES?
They are 1.8m long.

BLUETOOTH INFORMATION

THE FIREBOARD UTILIZES A BLUETOOTH 4.0 (BLE) CONNECTION (CONNECTED TO A MOBILE DEVICE) AND WIRELESS (WIFI) TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE FIREBOARD SERVERS. SEVERAL KEY FEATURES PERTAINING TO THESE CONNECTIONS ARE:
  • Traditional Bluetooth “pairing” is not necessary with BLE connections.
  • The BLE connection is used to discover FireBoard devices, and initially to setup WiFi.
  • The FireBoard will also utilize the BLE connection to transmit temperature data to a mobile device, in the event the FireBoard is not connected to WiFi.

WHAT TYPE OF BLUETOOTH CONNECTION DOES THE FIREBOARD UTILIZE TO CONNECT TO THE FIREBOARD?
The FireBoard utilizes a Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Low Energy) Profile to communicate between the mobile app and the FireBoard. With a BLE connection, the pairing process where you entered a passcode is not needed anymore. The mobile app should automatically scan and find FireBoard devices via BLE.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE PROBLEMS CONNECTING TO THE FIREBOARD VIA BLUETOOTH?
We have included more detailed information regarding getting connected via Bluetooth at our online Knowledge Base here.

POWER RELATED QUESTIONS

HOW DO YOU TURN ON / OFF THE FIREBOARD?
The FireBoard FBX11 turns on by holding the power button for 3 seconds. To power it down, also hold the power button for 3 seconds.  If for reason the FireBoard won’t power down, you can also hold the power button for approximately 10 seconds and it will force the power off.

HOW LONG DOES THE DEVICE TAKE TO CHARGE?
The FireBoard charging circuitry on the FBX11 is set to charge at 1000 mAh. With a 2600 mAh battery onboard we have found that for a complete charging cycle, the FBX11 takes approx 4-6 hours. The charging and power behavior of the FBX11 is similiar to a cell phone, where the device can be powered from USB and also recharge at the same time. The device will automatically turn on when it is plugged into USB Power.

HOME, KITCHEN, & COOKING ENTHUSIAST

HOW HOT CAN THE FIREBOARD AND PROBES GET?
The probes themselves are rated to 300°C / 572°F.  The cables are rated to 380°C / 716°F.

The FireBoard unit itself is rated to 60°C (140°F), but in our laboratory testing we believe the device should withstand temperatures in excess of this rating. Despite those tests, certain components used within the FireBoard are only rated up to 60°C (140°F).

IS THE FIREBOARD WEATHER RESISTANT?
Our solution to protecting the FireBoard to outdoor conditions is to provide a water resistant case. We have created this case for our customers to be able to use in harsh outside weather conditions. It has been tested through severe rain storms and has been successful.

WHAT ABOUT GAS / PROPANE / CHARCOAL GRILLS?
Absolutely!  The temperature probes are rated up to 300°C, which should be satisfactory for most cooks on a grill. Temperatures inside of some grills may exceed the probe ratings, especially over a direct flame, so please use caution as you approach those higher temperatures.

WASHING THE TEMPERATURE PROBES.

Our manufacturer for the probes confirms they are waterproof, and our testing so far supports this claim. Please keep in mind our recommended probe maintenance tips. https://docs.fireboard.io/probes/care_maintenance.html#Probe-Maintenance-and-Care

MOUNTING THE FIREBOARD UNIT
Option 1: The FireBoard Case is perfect for mounting. It comes with magnets already installed, a kick stand, and a strap to mount with.
Option 2: The device can be mounted onto a metal surface using a magnetic sticker.
Option 3: There are two holes on the underside of the device, as part of the two cylindrical features at the top of the device case. These holes are provided to be used with 1/8” screws to attach other mounting hardware of your choosing.

PROBE PLACEMENT AND INSTALLATION.
The temperature probes can be routed and placed into refrigerators, freezers or ovens. In many cases, the probes can simply be cable-tied so it can remain stationary.
The probes are fitted with a M10 threading. This threading can be used with a M10 nut and a 11mm hole to tighten down the probe on a L-bracket (L-bracket not provided).

ROUTING THE PROBE CABLES TO THE UNIT.
In most cases, the probe cable can be routed to the corner of doors and can usually be fitted tightly to minimize any air loss around seals on the door.
Most refrigeration unit walls are a thin sheet metal & insulation sandwich, which is easy to route through using a 13mm hole. This hole can be sealed with silicone found easily at any hardware store. FireBoard Labs is not responsible for any damage to user equipment.
